Bio
Monsieur Jamin (French, b. 1982)
Monsieur Jamin is a French contemporary painter whose work is driven by gesture, intensity, and the physical act of painting. Moving between figuration and abstraction, his paintings are built through repetition, pressure, and assertive mark-making, resulting in works that feel immediate, confrontational, and materially present. The figure appears as a site of action rather than representation, shaped through process rather than narrative.
Self-taught, Jamin approaches painting as an instinctive and bodily process. His works are built through layers of paint, assertive line, and rhythmic colour, allowing the surface to retain evidence of its making. Rather than refining or resolving an image, he embraces disruption and revision, using the act of painting as a means of testing and responding to the surface in real time.
Although elements of the figure occasionally appear, they function as structural or emotional anchors rather than subjects. Jamin’s work prioritises energy, movement, and presence, situating the viewer in close proximity to the physical decisions that shape each composition. His paintings resist polish, favouring immediacy and intensity over finish.
Jamin exhibits internationally and his work is held in private collections across Europe. Alongside his independent practice, he collaborates with British artist James Green under the shared identity PROOF, an ongoing partnership centred on non-verbal communication through painting and shared studio practice in France and the United Kingdom.
