Bio
Jonathan Hooper is an artist based in Leeds in West Yorkshire. He grew up in the Chilterns, and studied at Bucks College of Higher Education; Falmouth School of Art and Design; and the University of Leeds.
He paints the city of Leeds, and in particular the domestic architecture and spaces of the suburbs to its north-west. He has been immersed in this landscape for thirty-five years: his paintings show houses just like the ones he has lived in; the parks he took his children to; the area’s streets, footpaths and shops. He works from his own photos, exploring colour and composition in drawings before painting in oil or acrylic. He wants the paintings to carry something of the feeling of being in a place that you have known, experienced and thought about for a long time.
He was one of the five painters in the group exhibition ‘Where We Live’ which toured England in 2021-23. He was elected a member of the New English Art Club in 2025.
