Monica Popham

Bio

Monica Popham is a Gibraltarian landscape artist based in London, whose work explores the interplay of light and architecture across Mediterranean spaces. Her paintings often focus on cropped façades, balconies, shutters, windows and sunlit walls, transforming everyday architectural details into bold compositions of colour, form and shadow.

Sunlight is central to Popham’s visual language. Rather than treating light as atmosphere alone, her paintings use it to define structure: flattening buildings into blocks of colour, sharpening architectural edges and giving weight to the surfaces it touches. Shadows are not incidental in these works, but active compositional forms, often becoming central subjects in their own right.

In 2024, Popham won Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year, which led to a commission for the Science Museum, London. The resulting work now forms part of the museum’s permanent collection. Her work is also held in the Soho House Art Collection, where it hangs in Barcelona, and the Gibraltar Government Art Collection. She has exhibited internationally, including in Philadelphia, Tangier and across the UK.

Within The Shape of Light, Popham’s paintings bring a precise architectural register to the exhibition. Her use of sunlight, shadow and saturated colour speaks directly to the show’s interest in how light can shape a painted image, turning walls, windows and façades into carefully structured arrangements of surface, atmosphere and form.
