- Dale Grimshaw
Assembly of the Gods
After nearly a decade of studying and painting the faces of people from across the world, Dale Grimshaw has put together all this experience and empathy into his most intense and personal collection of provocative portraits for his most significant show to date. The images he creates are both fantastical and deeply real. These characters have emotions and feelings, with a whole life behind them in their eyes.
Dale has spent much time over the past few years supporting the Free West Papua campaign and has become aware of the plight of indigenous peoples across the globe, who are encountering the modern world in the shape of big business greedily profiting from their land and resources.
In some of his portraits Dale has included imagery from the Western world to emphasise this mix of cultures, while some of the faces speak for themselves within dramatic abstract frameworks. An awareness of how the world is moving out of step with the rhythms of the nature and their environment around them is also something that concerns the artist in these works. While these are portraits depicting dignity and strength, they are also touchingly vulnerable, perhaps an awareness that their place in the world for is rapidly fading into memory.
Dale has shown his work in many successful solo and group exhibitions in the UK, Europe and the USA. In recent years he has become renowned for his impressive Street Art and is in demand across the world. He employs the same intensity of expression that he has developed in his studio, with powerful effect and universal appeal.
To mark this prestigious exhibition, Dale will be painting a large-scale mural at the London Mural Fest on Tuesday 8th September to Saturday 12th September.
Please join us on Saturday 19th Sept for a private view from 11am – 5pm. Music and refreshments will be provided, the event is open to all with social distancing measures in place but please do email info@wellhung.co.uk to confirm attendance. Admission is, as always, free.
