Flowers In A Window by Holly Brodie

Holly Brodie is a London-based painter interested in the subjective experience of place. She was brought up in rural Somerset and studied English at Oxford University (1998-2001), where she was encouraged to explore connections between literature and art, which continue to influence her practice. Her work asks how responses to unremarkable landscapes are informed by memories and personal associations, with a current focus on suburbia and its history.
I’ve found myself increasingly using a portrait format, because I’m concerned with the subjective experience of place from a particular viewpoint – I want to paint what an individual might see at a given, unremarkable moment, taking in everything from telephone wires overhead to paving slabs underfoot. While bold shapes and lines define the scene, the gaze is directed to a particular house, where the windowsill has been curated for the pleasure of those on either side of the glass.
This piece is being exhibited in our Well Hung Painting Prize exhibition. We will dispatch all online orders after the exhibition closes on 22 August.
