Oil on Cradled Panel

7.5 x 10cm

Jack Savage is a painter and miniaturist currently in the final year of a fine art degree at City & Guilds of London Art School. His practice centres around memories of his past, and the connection between his childhood and his trans identity. His process involves making puppets and dioramas to depict memories, using these models as subjects for small-scale (often miniature) oil paintings. He is a student member of the Royal Miniature Society and has won multiple awards at their exhibitions.

As a trans person, the increasing vitriol towards the trans community in this country and globally has been scaring me, and this painting was my way of processing how I’ve been feeling in the wake of the government’s new policies and guidance. Feeling like I have to perform to gain acceptance or tolerance, but that this performance is in vain. I hand carved a wooden marionette of myself, posed him and painted him dancing naked in a theatre for public view, appealing to their consciousnesses.

This piece is being exhibited in our  Well Hung Painting Prize exhibition. We will dispatch all online orders after the exhibition closes on 22 August.
