£1,400.00

Purcell is an artist and teacher who lives and works in Bedford, UK. His work is informed by his experience of curating fine art and social history collections, and illustrating a graphic novel on Atomic Testing for Oxford University Press. Purcell has developed a consistent theme of working with archive collections and found visual culture of mid-century cinema and stage. He has exhibited in group and solo shows the US and UK.
In ‘In Dreams’ I was looking to immerse the viewer in a dreamworld that connects cinema and painting. I began with a found publicity image of the actress Barbara Hutton, where, unusually for these portraits, she is shown looking away from the camera. This pose, and the lighting which I exaggerated further, gave the perfect platform. It was an image I could wrap in ambiguities through inverting the colours of a Guido Reni and rendering the white dress almost like porcelain.
This piece is being exhibited in our Well Hung Painting Prize exhibition. We will dispatch all online orders after the exhibition closes on 22 August.
