Marcus is a British artist based in Margate, known for his bold, intuitive approach to painting. His work combines layering, distressing, and blending to create textured, immersive surfaces that invite closer attention. With roots in design, Marcus brings a sharp, contemporary edge to his practice.

Working with varnish as a primary material rather than a finish, the piece uses experimental mark-making to build a surface that reveals itself slowly. The choice of shellac is deliberate: a substance historically used to seal and protect, here exposed as the work itself. The marks are quiet and considered – less about bold gestures, more about what happens when you let the material do some of the talking.

This piece is being exhibited in our  Well Hung Painting Prize exhibition. We will dispatch all online orders after the exhibition closes on 22 August.
