Oil on Board

25 x 50cm

Growing up in Grimsby before heading south, I have mostly forgotten how to work in a studio. Since art school alongside his painting, I have sandwiched in a career in product design, electronic art, graphic design and more recently teaching in University. Now able to devote more time and energy to painting, my practice is rooted in plein air, on the spot observation.

Nothing is added to the paintings in the studio except varnish and a frame.

Just rigorous observation and response.

I have been working on a series of plein air streetscenes around London, hoping to capture something of the uniqueness of the city without resorting to obvious symbols. London holds its beauty in its modern working diversity; here it’s the the Coop sign, the reflected city in crisp modern glass, the double yellow lines, the wonderful unplanned roofline against the rich blue of the sky, and the moment when the low winter sun lines up with a street lighting up strips of life amongst the shadows.

This piece is being exhibited in our  Well Hung Painting Prize exhibition. We will dispatch all online orders after the exhibition closes on 22 August.
