Scarlett Budden (b.1998, London, United Kingdom) is a British figurative painter based in London. Her work explores the complexities of spectatorship and voyeurism within both cinematic practice and the traditions of figurative painting.

She completed a First Class BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Newcastle University in 2022, before graduating from the MA Painting programme at the Royal College of Art in 2024. Her work has been exhibited both in the UK and internationally with galleries including Sim Smith and OhSh Projects.

The work explores the instability of the image, the relationship between subjectivity and objectivity, and the body as an anthropomorphic being. Here, the buffalo head functions as a dystopian portal, haunting its observer while negotiating the paradoxes of human experience. The negative space within the curving skull becomes a liminal passage where interior and exterior collapse into one another, posing as a metonym for interiority.

This piece is being exhibited in our  Well Hung Painting Prize exhibition. We will dispatch all online orders after the exhibition closes on 22 August.
