I was born in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex and grew up in Bristol. My father was the sculptor Gerald Scott. I initially studied for a BA in sculpture followed by an MA in painting. Alongside my continuing creative practice, I followed a career teaching at various universities / art schools in the UK. Most recently at Bristol School of Art (Queens Road) and Bristol UWE. I left teaching in 2021 to concentrate fully on my own painting, working from my studio above the house that I share with my family.

The painting is an encounter between intention and intuition and a reconciliation of these is central to its meaning. Of course, this may not be possible and that is perhaps where some of its drama lies. I have allowed the materials a voice and the opportunity to play a part in the animation of its surface and the expression of its identity. The title “Muggy” may be whimsical but it also reflects a link to wider landscapes including some of the atmospheric conditions, air, through which we move.

This piece is being exhibited in our  Well Hung Painting Prize exhibition. We will dispatch all online orders after the exhibition closes on 22 August.
