Egg Tempera on Gesso Panel in Handmade Bark Frame

13 x 18cm

Sophia Ponté (b.1996) is a London-based fine artist whose practice spans drawing, printmaking and painting. She holds a Veterinary MB from the University of Cambridge (2021) and recently completed the Online Drawing Development Year at the Royal Drawing School (2025). Ponté’s work explores human relationships with the natural world, combining traditional techniques with scavenged natural materials to create a dialogue between the subject matter and her local environment.

“One for sorrow, two for joy” is a painting about how happiness and loss often follow each other closely in life. The title is taken from the traditional nursery rhyme about seeing magpies. I wrote a poem of the same name that reflects upon cycles of life and death in the natural world, and how we never know quite what lies around the corner. The bark that frames this piece was taken from a fallen oak tree on my family’s farm.

This piece is being exhibited in our  Well Hung Painting Prize exhibition. We will dispatch all online orders after the exhibition closes on 22 August.
