Bio

(b. 1981, UK)

Joseph Loughborough is a British artist whose powerful figurative work explores themes of identity, emotion, and the human condition. Known for his expressive linework and dramatic compositions, he creates drawings that feel raw, layered, and psychologically charged.

Born in Portsmouth, a historic coastal city in southern England, Loughborough spent his early years exploring abandoned boatyards and tidal inlets – experiences that continue to shape his visual world. After studying at Portsmouth University, he developed a practice influenced by fine art, philosophy, and skateboarding culture, later spending nearly a decade living and working in Berlin and Paris. He is now based in London.

Working primarily in charcoal, ink, and gold leaf, his drawings feature solitary figures and ritual-like scenes that suggest inner conflict, reflection, and survival. Inspired by existential thinkers like Camus and Kierkegaard, Loughborough often explores the tension between chaos and control, vulnerability and defiance.

His work has been exhibited widely in the UK, Europe, and the US, and is collected internationally.
