Born in Cardiff & trained in sculpture, I worked professionally in the 1990s & 2000s as an investigator of historic landscapes, before returning to painting & sculpture full time, based in Nottinghamshire. My work won the Attenborough Prize (2022 & 2024), 1st prize in Paint Out Norfolk (2020), & the Thoresby Open (2017). I was also shortlisted in the Sir John Hurt Art Prize, highly commended in the Buxton Spa Art Prize and a finalist on Sky TV’s ‘Landscape Artist of the Year’ (2025, series 10).

I was drawn to the structural dynamism of this hard-edged urban landscape, combining modernist and historic architecture. Focus was on the monumental gas holder struts, their latticework creating an interesting profile against the sky. Spare colour accentuates the sculptural nature of the environment. The open expanse of foreground, thrust forward by a heavy sky, is a balance within the composition and funnels the eye towards the main subject and back along the canal edge to distant structures.

This piece is being exhibited in our  Well Hung Painting Prize exhibition. We will dispatch all online orders after the exhibition closes on 22 August.
